BFAR to implement fishing ban in Visayan Sea starting Nov. 15

(Eagle News) — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) announced through its Fisheries Administrative Order 167-3 that starting November 15, a fishing ban will be implemented in the Visayan Sea.

The fishing ban will last until February 15, 2019 but may be extended until March depending on the changing spawning pattern of fish.

According to BFAR Undersecretary Aduardo Gongona, the move aims to help the fish production of sardines, tawilis, tamban and mackerels.

The Visayan Sea is one of the centers of the country’s biodiversity where at least 400,000 metric tons of fish are produced annually.

“Pag open season na naman dyan sa Visayan Sea, talagang makakaasa po tayo na marami pong mahuhuli dyan. Visayan Sea ay rich biodiversity, nandiyan lahat ang daming species ng mga isda, at kung maalagaan mo lang lahat, we will have more production and supply of fish,” Gongona said in an phone patch interview.
