BFAR: Drop in salinity levels in some Cavite water bodies may have caused reported shellfish deaths

(Eagle News)–Heavy rainfall that led to drops in the salinity levels of select water bodies in Bacoor and Sangley Point in Cavite may have caused the reported deaths of shellfish there.

In a statement, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said based on laboratory results, the level of salinity was found to range from 19 to 25 ppt, lower than the 27 to 35 ppt salinity level required for shellfish to survive.

According to BFAR, results also showed the dissolved oxygen levels in the sampling areas were low.

High concentrations of ammonia and phosphates were also detected.

“These chemicals at high levels may cause detrimental effects to fish and other marine life,” BFAR said.

BFAR said   shellfish from Manila Bay on the other hand was safe to consume.

“The general public is advised however to collect only live shellfish and wash them properly before cooking,” BFAR said.
