MANILA, Philippines (Eagle News) — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) are now monitoring Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon and Kanlaon in Negros Island, after showing signs of volcanic activity
According to NDRRMC Executive Director, Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Administrator Ricardo Jalad, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) during the past 24 hours recorded five volcanic earthquakes around Kanlaon.
PHIVOLCS said that Mt. Bulusan emitted larger amounts of volcanic gas making it hard to observe due to thick clouds covering the summit.
Bulusan Volcano remains on Alert level 1, which means that it is currently in a state of unrest probably driven by hydrothermal processes that could generate steam driven or phreatic eruptions.
Meanwhile, PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum said that in their monitoring of the eight active volcanoes in the country, only Mt. Mayon, Taal Volcano, Kanlaon and Mt. Bulusan showed volcanic activity
Solidum said it is just normal for volcanoes to become restive from time to time.
