900 sacks of rice found rotting inside Tacloban NFA warehouse

(Eagle News) — At least 900 sacks of rice grains have been found rotting inside the National Food Authority (NFA) warehouse in Tacloban City.

The shipment, which was seized in 2014 and then kept in the warehouse for four years, was no longer fit for consumption, according to the NFA.

The rice will reportedly be buried in the Tacloban City landfill.

The discovery comes following reports the NFA had less rice buffer stocks.

On Tuesday, April 17, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced Cabinet Secretary Jun Evasco Jr. was no longer a part of the NFA Council, which had been at loggerheads with the NFA led by Jason Aquino.

Roque said this was after President Rodrigo Duterte himself decided to revert the NFA under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture.

Apart from the NFA, the Philippine Coconut Authority and the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority are back under the DA, Roque said.
