Government takes over maintenance of MRT 3

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) — The Department of Transportation on Tuesday took over the maintenance of the Metro Rail Transit or MRT Line 3, after it cancelled the contract of Busan Universal Rail Inc. (BURI) as the line’s maintenance provider.

DOTr decided to cancel BURI’s contract, due to the persistent failure in MRT operations in the past year and a half.

“It cannot be overemphasized that what is at stake here is the welfare and interest of the riding public. This office could not just sit back and wait while watching Buri trifle and flirt with the lives of the commuting public,” Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade said in a statement.

Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Cesar Chavez said that DOTr will maintain the MRT in the next three to six months and assured the public it would improve the services of the MRT, as the department looks for a replacement for BURI as maintenance provider.

“In three to six months, we can improve the MRT 3, make it safer and more reliable,” Chavez assured riders.

“Don’t expect a miracle, but expect accountability,” he added.
