QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Consumers should expect an increase in their electric bills this month due to the crude oil price hike. “Customers can expect even higher rates in coming months,” said Meralco in a statement. According to Meralco Utility Economics Head Lawrence Fernandez, the increase will particularly affect the generation charge. Power rates are due to increase this month because of the increase in electricity rates in the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM). The Manila Electric Company also confirmed that the generation charge will increase. The rate of increase will be announced on Monday. In Luzon, power consumption has also increased with the start of the summer season. The Department of Energy, in the meantime, called on the public to save on electricity.
