Electricity rates to increase this month
Power rates are due to increase this month because of the increase in electricity rates in the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM). The Manila Electric Company also confirmed that the generation charge will increase. The rate of increase will be announced on Monday. In Luzon, power consumption has also increased with the start of the summer season. The Department of Energy, in the meantime, called on the public to save on electricity.
Expect lower electric bills in September
Good news for electric consumers. The Manila Electric Company has announced that the electric bills will go down P0.58 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) this month on lower generation and transmission charges resulting in lower electric bills in September. Militant Groups hold Protest rally Against MERALCO Power Hike
Members of the militant Group Kilusang Mayo Uno held a protest rally in front of the Meralco Kamuning Branch to stop the Manila Electric Co. from increasing electricity rates. Meralco had earlier announced an increase of 89 centavos per kilowatt hour that will be billed to consumers in April. The increase was due to higher power generation costs and related charges, according to MERALCO.
