The team arrived early in the evening at Los Angeles International Airport, led by defender Christie Rampone who held aloft the Women’s World Cup trophy as she disembarked the plane.

The squad defeated Japan 5-2 during Sunday’s World Cup final in Vancouver, British Columbia avenging their loss to Japan in the 2011 final on penalty kicks.

The U.S. becomes the first nation to win the Women’s Cup three times, following wins in 1991 and 1999.

A celebratory rally is planned for Tuesday (July 7) in downtown Los Angeles.
