VIRGINIA, United States (Reuters) – “I can’t believe he did this,” the wife of James Hodgkinson said at a news conference on Thursday (June 15).

Suzanne Hodgkinson only learnt from a television reporter that her husband was the key suspect in the shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise and others as they practised for a charity baseball game.

She said she was in a state of disbelief.

The gunman, identified by police as 66-year-old James Hodgkinson from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, fired repeatedly at the men playing on the baseball field on Wednesday (June 14) morning.

The female Hodgkinson said her husband had left Illinois several months ago for Washington D.C. with the hope of working to “change the tax brackets.”

She said she had not been in regular touch with her husband since he left Illinois.

Her husband was wounded in a gunfight with Capitol Hill police at the scene and later died.
