We need superheroes – A review of “Avengers: Age of Ultron”

Age of Ultron posterQUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News Service, May 5) – The latest installment of Avengers certainly did not disappoint and is well worth the wait. On the day of its opening, it broke box office records and as of press time has earned $630.3 million dollars.

At the week of its release in local theaters, Avengers fever reached critical temperature as many fans enjoyed taking pictures among exhibits of their favorite Avenger characters found in malls.

So what makes the Avengers such a hit?

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the film’s producers decided to give the franchise a modern treatment – a welcome departure from their comic book origin. The addition of reality, emotional connection and grit made the characters easier to relate with as compared to their idealized versions in the comic books.

The humor is also well-appreciated – thoughtful use of jokes and fine timing leavened the film, surprisingly as it deals with an attempted extinction of mankind.

Of course, kudos to the cast as they once again turn in amazing performances. Their characterization is so iconic that it is hard to imagine other actors playing the roles.

The visual effects are quite stunning, and the team in charge with the said effects have clearly outdone themselves.

All of these element taken together makes a great movie.

But underlying all of these elements is the need for superheroes. In real life, our world also faces many dangers and threats like earthquakes and super-typhoons, epidemics, wars and global warming. I think our collective subconscious recognizes the need for superheroes to save the Earth.

Come to think about it, it would be wonderful to live in the Avengers alternate universe. Granted, humanity is faced with total annihilation on a regular basis, but at least the heroes are always guaranteed to save the day and the villains are always easy to identify.

Of course, Avengers is just a movie. It is time for us to learn that instead of waiting for superheroes to appear, we have in ourselves the power to make a difference – to change the world for the better.
