A giant winter “bomb cyclone” walloped the US East Coast on Thursday, January 4, with freezing cold and heavy snow, forcing thousands of flight cancellations and widespread school closures — and even prompting the US Senate to cancel votes for the rest of the week.
Most of the people stayed indoors, cars and roads are seen here covered with thick snow.
The snow gusts, and strong winds blowing, plus an estimated snowfall of eight to ten inches in New York alone, put the usually bustling city at a standstill.
Long Island has even a worse snowstorm forecast with snow accumulations of 12 to 18 inches, and gusts of more than 60 miles per hour.
Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York State has declared a state of emergency across New York City, Long Island and Westchester County,
In Central Park, snow was about eight inches.
“This is not a normal snowstorm,” Gov. Cuomo warned at a news conference Thursday morning.
“It is snow plus very high gusts of wind, and that changes the situation dramatically.”
In Monmouth county in New Jersey, about two to three feet of snowdrift covered the cars along the road.
