MEXICO CITY, Mexico (Reuters) — American expats living in Mexico City gathered for a gala event on US election night (November 8) to eagerly await the results of who will be the next American president.

The event was organised by the American Society of Mexico and brings together both US citizens and Mexicans for the event.

Mexican interest in the US election has been strong after Republican candidate Donald Trump vowed to build a wall along the border and deport undocumented migrants.

Many at the Mexico City event are Clinton supporters and are quietly hopeful their candidate will make it past the 270 electoral college votes needed to take power.

“I’m still nervous, I still think it will be a close call but if Hillary wills I am very excited to have the first female president of the United States,” said US expat, Danita Delce.

Pollsters have been pointing to a Clinton win in the vote.

“I’m pretty confident about the results. I follow 538 and I follow a lot of the polls so I’m pretty confident. That said there is always room for a surprise and if there is a surprise we will survive,” added American, Laura.

Both candidates scored early victories in states where they were expected to win. Trump captured conservative states in the South and Midwest, while Clinton swept several states on the East Coast and Illinois in the Midwest.

With voting completed in more than half of the 50 U.S. states, the race was too close to call in Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Virginia, states that could be vital to deciding which contender wins the presidency.
