Torrential rains brought by Typhoon Chan-Hom have wreaked havoc in many parts of east China’s Zhejiang Province for the past two days, including causing severe flooding, landslides and damaging many roads.

A total of 20 counties in the province reported more than 100 millimeters of rainfall during a 36-hour period.

In the coast city of Zhoushan, where the typhoon made landfall on Saturday afternoon, the persistent downpour led to knee-deep floodwaters in the low-lying areas in Dinghai district, prompting local authorities to evacuate many affected residents.

Heavy rains also flooded a salt field in Daishan County, and typhoon-force winds damaged a local vineyard and large swaths of corn fields.

The storm flattened more than 40 hectares of bamboo grove in Anji County, Huzhou City.

In Dongyang City, the rainfall damaged many roads and led to a number of landslides, especially in the rural area.

The typhoon brushed Shanghai late Saturday as it veered into the Yellow Sea.

It is the second storm to hit China in days after severe tropical storm Linfa made landfall on the coast of the southern Guangdong Province.
