Two teenagers killed as flash floods hit Israel desert

(Eagle News) — Two teenagers were killed in flash floods in separate incidents in Negev, a desert and semidesert region of southern Israel, and in the desert hills east of Bethlehem, on Wednesday, April 25, as Israel experienced a rare hail, as well as thunderstorms.

The bodies of the two teenagers — a teenage Bedouin boy who was swept away in the Negev desert, and another young Palestinian girl who was swept away by raging floodwaters while herding sheep – were also found later on Wednesday.

According to a report by the Times of Israel which quoted police reports, the young Bedouin boy was swept away in Mamashit stream in the Negev desert, but was pronounced dead after being found.

The other flood victim, the Palestinian girl, was swept away by flooding near the settlement of Ma’ale Amos which is near the southern West Bank.

Ma’ale Amos settlement was named after the Biblical prophet Amos, who lived in the village of Tekoa nearby.

The news report also said that some 42 high school students who were suffering from light hypothermia after being trapped by flooding while on a school trip, were also treated

It said the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, the capital of Negev, was also preparing to receive more injured students.

Heavy rains and a rare hailstorm also struck central Israel.
