(Reuters) American John John Florence totaled the second highest score Saturday (December 3) to advance at the Vans World Cup of Surfing on Hawaii’s famous Sunset Beach.

Florence, the world number one ranked surfer, managed a score of 9.77 on one ride and finished with a total of 15.94 (out of possible 20) to win his heat and move on to the fourth round.

Brazilian Gabriel Medina was also a heat winner with his total of 15.10 and Ricardo Christie of New Zealand will join him in the fourth round after winning his heat with a 15.66 total.

The Vans World Cup of Surfing is part of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, three World Surf League season ending events that take place on Hawaii’s North Shore.
