Thousands arrive for the first Australian concert of South Korean pop band Big Bang

Thousands of fans gathered on Saturday (October 17) at Sydney’s Allphones Arena for the first Australian concert of South Korean boy band Big Bang.

The Seoul-based group, consisting of five members, T.O.P, Taeyang, G-Dragon, Daesung and Seungri will kickoff the Australian leg of their 2015: MADE tour with two shows in Sydney followed by two in Melbourne.

While many of Big Bang’s Australian fans are from a South Korean background, concert go-ers said that language was not a barrier for Big Bang.

“Sometimes you have to google to translate it but sometimes it doesn’t matter because we don’t know,” said Sarah Albrtol of Australian Filipino origin. Her sister Anne agrees: “Yeah, it’s very catchy.”

Kelcee Davy flew to Sydney from Brisbane to see the first Australian concert. “The music, the music, language doesn’t matter, the music speaks through all of that and it’s just catchy, it’s fun to dance to, the music videos are intense, they’re amazing,” she said.

While concert go-ers agree that Big Bang is their favourite K-pop band, it was harder for fans to agree on a favourite band member.

“Taeyang, he’s the man. Yeah, cause he’s the best. We love all of them but he’s the best, he’s definitely the best,” said Lachlan Armstrong-Sue from Sydney.

Fan Janice Cui, said G-Dragon is her favourite: “No reason, I’ve just loved him for four years already. He’s not like other Korean styles, he’s more handsome and stuff like that.”

While Eva Wang said that T.O.P is her favourite because: “His rapping is really good and he’s really really handsome.”

According to their promoters, the Big Bang official YouTube channel has accumulated more than 1.2 billion views, among which their hottest hits – Fantastic Baby, Blue and Bad Boy – have accounted for more than 250 million views.
