NASA captures unprecedented images of supersonic shockwaves

WASHINGTON, United States (AFP) — NASA has captured unprecedented photos of the interaction of shockwaves from two supersonic aircraft, part of its research into developing planes that can fly faster than sound without thunderous “sonic booms”. When an aircraft crosses that threshold — around 1,225 kilometers (760 miles) per hour at sea level — it produces waves from the pressure it puts on the air around it, which merge to cause the ear-splitting sound. Hyperloop startup moves closer to near-supersonic rail

SAN FRANCISCO, United States (AFP) — United States startup Hyperloop One on Wednesday announced the first successful full-systems test of its near-supersonic rail transit system. The test took place in May at the company’s development track in the Nevada desert near Las Vegas, and involved a vehicle coasting above tracks for slightly more than five seconds using magnetic levitation, according to the startup. The test vehicle accelerated to a speed of 70 miles (112 kilometers) […]

Boom’s supersonic prototype prepares for 2018 test flight

Reuters — Colorado-based start-up Boom Supersonic is hoping to compete with the major airline companies by developing a new supersonic passenger jet. If successful, their supersonic airliner will fly 2.6 times faster than any other aircraft on the market today. Hitting speeds up to 1,451 miles per hour, the planes could reduce typical New York to London flight times of seven hours to little more than three hours. Boom is aiming to test their XB-1 […]

South Korea says it conducted joint drills with US B-1B strategic bomber

SEOUL, South Korea (Reuters) — South Korea said on Tuesday (May 30) it had conducted a joint drill with a United States supersonic B-1B Lancer bomber after North Korea’s state media earlier accused the US of staging a drill to practise dropping nuclear bombs on the Korean peninsula. Moon Sang-gyun, a spokesperson for the South Korean defense ministry, said the exercise took place on Monday (May 29) but declined to give further details. Earlier on […]
