MIAMI, United States (AFP) — Wind and solar power could meet 80 percent of US demand for electricity, as long as improvements are made in transmission and storage, researchers said Tuesday. Until a few years ago, these renewable energy sources were thought to be capable of supplying only about 20-30 percent of US needs, according to the report in the journal Energy and Environmental Science. Currently, the United States gets about two-thirds of its electricity […]

Solar powered bid to bring modernity to developing world
A 40-meter long photovoltaic computer which provides clean water, while generating electricity to recharge external devices, has been designed by an Italian company for use in the developing world.
Device uses solar power to purify water
Desolenator, a U.K.-based water desalination start-up, aims to give families in deprived countries the ability to turn salt water and contaminated water into pure drinking water. Their water desalination unit, expected to cost around $500 USD, uses solar energy to produce some 15 litres of water a day. The company says the technology has the potential to provide water independence for up to a billion people living in areas where clean water is scarce; using […]
Electricity rates to go up in 2015
Power rates will go up by as much as 4 centavos per kilowatthour next year. This was announced by Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Executive Director Saturnino Juan after the ERC approved the feed-in-tariff allowance or “fit-all” for renewable energy projects. The so-called fit-all is given to renewable energy players as incentive to invest in more expensive sectors. The renewable energy players are solar, wind, biomass and hydropower companies. Under the “fit-all” system, renewable energy companies […]
