France cracks down on plastic waste, destruction of unsold clothes

PARIS, France (AFP) — The French parliament on Thursday passed a law forbidding retailers from destroying unsold clothes and banning single-use plastic containers by 2040, part of the government’s efforts to reduce waste. The bill adopted by the Senate, after being cleared by the lower house National Assembly last week, bans fast-food restaurants from serving food that is not for takeaway in plastic containers beyond 2023. All single-use plastic packaging will be banned 17 years […]

Recycling plastic — Japan style

TOKYO, Japan (AFP) — At a recycling plant outside Tokyo, workers in face masks pick through an unending torrent of plastic rubbish, fuelled by a national obsession with pristine packaging — and famously strict rules that ensure much of it is reclaimed and reused. Some 10 tonnes of recyclable plastics are brought in every day to be processed at the Ichikawa Kankyo Engineering center, where workers hover over conveyor belts removing any stray items or […]

Progress toward ‘infinitely recyclable’ plastic

TAMPA, United States (AFP) — US scientists said Thursday they have made progress toward a kind of plastic that can be recycled “infinitely,” and that it appears durable enough to compete with regular plastics. Unlike plastics made from petroleum products, the new kind can be converted back to its original small-molecule state, and remade into new plastics over and over, said the report in the journal Science. “The polymers can be chemically recycled and reused, […]

With materials scarce, Cuban designers master recycling chic

HAVANA, Cuba (Reuters) — Designers in Cuba are turning trash to treasure, forced to think outside the box and re-purpose rubbish amidst a shortage of raw materials in the Caribbean nation. Olaff Alejo’s salt lamps are eerily beautiful and designed to purify the air. Yet the Cuban designer must rummage through trash bins and scour the sidewalks of Havana for scraps of wood and obsolete electrical devices to manufacture them. In Cuba, designers of clothes and […]

Cash incentives help entrepreneur persuade Nigerians to recycle

LAGOS, Nigeria (Reuters) — Olamide Babajide goes out on the streets of Lagos to shop for old tires, a key component for her furniture products. Babajide is the founder of Pearl Recycling, a company that transforms recyclables like car tires, magazines, straws, plastics and wood among other things into household items. The company also offers money in exchange for recyclable garbage. Pearl Recycling was set up in 2014 with 5,000 U.S dollars that Babajide won […]

Fluorescent sorting could light up recycling rates

LONDON, United Kingdom (Reuters) — British-based scientists behind a new technique that adds luminescent markers to plastic packaging labels say it will lead to marked improvements in recycling rates, if applied across the industry. Researchers at Brunel University London and their industry partners Nextek say their new technology is an inexpensive solution to low plastic container recycling rates because it can be retrofitted to existing sorting systems. The marker will only cost an additional £1 […]
