NASA says new heavy-lift rocket debut not likely until 2018

(Reuters) – NASA’s new heavy-lift rocket, designed to fly astronauts to the moon, asteroids and eventually Mars, likely will not have its debut test flight until November 2018, nearly a year later than previous estimates, agency officials said on Wednesday. NASA is 70 percent confident of making a November 2018 launch date, given the technical, financial and management hurdles the Space Launch System faces on the road to development, NASA associate administrators Robert Lightfoot and […]

LADEE spacecraft ends extended NASA mission by crashing into the moon

A spacecraft has ended a mission to map the dust and gases surrounding the moon with a planned kamikaze crash. Scientists believe the crash left no debris on the moon. On Friday, flight controllers confirmed that the orbiting spacecraft had crashed into the back side of the moon as planned, just three days after unexpectedly surviving the full lunar eclipse earlier in the week. Researchers believe the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) vaporized […]

Earth-like planet found

(Reuters) – For the first time, scientists have found an Earth-sized world orbiting in a life-friendly zone around a distant star. The discovery, announced on Thursday, is the closest scientists have come so far to finding a true Earth twin. The star, known as Kepler-186 and located about 500 light years away in the constellation Cygnus, is smaller and redder than the sun. The star’s outermost planet, designated Kepler-186f, receives about one-third the radiation from […]

Scientists say destructive solar blasts narrowly missed Earth in 2012

By Laila Kearney  (Reuters) – Fierce solar blasts that could have badly damaged electrical grids and disabled satellites in space narrowly missed Earth in 2012, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday. The bursts would have wreaked havoc on the Earth’s magnetic field, matching the severity of the 1859 Carrington event, the largest solar magnetic storm ever reported on the planet. That blast knocked out the telegraph system across the United States, according to University of California, […]

NASA announces discovery of 715 new planets

NASA  announced Wednesday  the discovery of 715 new planets discovered and verified because of the Kepler mission which is dedicated to finding new worlds like our own solar system, The 715 planets, or newly-verified worlds, orbit 305 stars, revealing multiple-planet systems much like our own solar system, NASA said in its statement. Nearly 95 percent of these planets are smaller than Neptune, which is almost four times the size of Earth. This discovery marks a […]
