Bottled water contains hundreds of thousands of plastic bits: study

Bottled water is up to a hundred times worse than previously thought when it comes to the number of tiny plastic bits it contains, a new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences said Monday. Using a recently invented technique, scientists counted on average 240,000 detectable fragments of plastic per liter of water in popular brands — between 10-100 times higher than prior estimates — raising potential health concerns that require further […]

Signs of the human era, from nuclear fallout to microplastics

By Daniel Lawler PARIS, July 10, 2023 (AFP) – As scientists make the case that humans have fundamentally transformed the planet enough to warrant our own geological epoch, another question arises: is there anything left untouched by humanity’s presence? Soaring greenhouse gases, ubiquitous microplastics, pervasive “forever chemicals”, the global upheaval of animals, even old mobile phones and chicken bones — all have been put forward as evidence that the world entered the Anthropocene, or era […]

Washing your clothes can create Arctic microplastic pollution

by Kelly Macnamara Agence France-Presse Households in Europe and North America are flooding the oceans with plastic pollution simply by washing their clothes, scientists said Tuesday after research found the majority of microplastics in Arctic seawater were polyester fibres. Plastic particles have infiltrated even the most remote and seemingly-pristine regions of the planet. These tiny fragments have been discovered inside fish in the deepest recesses of the ocean — the Mariana Trench — peppering Arctic […]

Researchers to conduct major Japan ocean microplastics survey

TOKYO, Japan (AFP) – Scientists will begin a two-year survey of microplastics in the coastal waters of Japan from April, a research group announced on Wednesday, with concern growing about the impact of plastics on the oceans. The survey organized by Japanese scientists and the Tara Ocean Foundation will be conducted by several marine research facilities located across Japan, from the northern island of Hokkaido to southwestern Kyushu. Researchers will collect samples for analysis of microplastics […]
