CA clears Joel Reyes in environmentalist’s murder; frees former Palawan governor from jail

(Eagle News)– Former Palawan Governor Joel Reyes has been released from jail. This was after the Court of Appeals ruled that the regional trial court had erred in filing the murder complaint against him. The complaint was in connection with the death of environmentalist Gerry Ortega in 2011. Apart from Ortega, also indicted were his brother, former Coron Mayor Mario Reyes, and others previously connected with the provincial government.

(Eagle News) — Former Palawan governor Joel Reyes was convicted of graft by the Sandiganbayan and sentenced to six to eight years in prison. The Third Division also barred Reyes from public service after it found him guilty of granting unwarranted benefit to Olympic Mines and Development Corp. (OMDC) when he renewed its mining permit.
