“Brexit 1.0” – Study reveals Britain’s original split from Europe

LONDON, ENGLAND, United Kingdom (Reuters) — Scientists have found evidence of how ancient Britain separated from Europe in what they are dubbing “Brexit 1.0” – a flooding event that happened in two stages thousands of years ago. In research published in the journal Nature Communications on Tuesday (April 4), the scientists said they now have proof that the opening of the Dover Strait in the English Channel, severing the land between Britain and France, occurred […]

Strike force: world’s most venomous scorpion in action

PARIS, France (AFP) — The world’s most lethal scorpion, the death stalker, has been caught on high-speed camera for the first time lashing out with its lethal stinger, scientists reported Tuesday. A comparison of half-a-dozen scorpion species shown in ultra-slow motion revealed an unsuspected variety of strike modes, they reported in the journal Functional Ecology. The death stalker had the fastest lunge of all, with its venomous stinger snapping over its head like […]

Nepal to relocate five rare one-horned rhinos

CHITWAN, Nepal (AFP) — Conservationists on Monday captured a rare one-horned rhinoceros in Nepal as part of an attempt to increase the number of the vulnerable animals, which are prized by wildlife poachers. Five rhinos — one male and four female — will be released into a national park in Nepal’s far west over the coming week in the hope of establishing a new breeding group. The first, a large male estimated to be around […]

Pollution in deep Pacific devastating earth – UK study

MARIANA TRENCHES, Pacific Ocean (Reuters) — A study of the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana and Kermadec trenches has found man-made pollutants in the deepest parts of the Pacific Ocean. Small crustaceans called amphipods, which populate the deepest recesses of the Pacific, were found to contain disturbingly large levels of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the organism’s fatty tissue. Voracious eaters who will eat anything that comes their way, amphipods are ideal for such research. Amphipod samples […]

CHESTER, ENGLAND, United Kingdom (Reuters) —  A quartet of eye-catching new individuals arrived at Chester Zoo, England. Native to Madagascar, the distinctive looking lowland streaked tenrecs are “striped like a bee and covered in spines like a hedgehog,” the zoo said in an e-mail. A video shot on Monday (March 27) shows the little known animals as they explore their habitat at the facility. The new arrivals are believed to be the only lowland streaked […]

by Harumi OZAWA Agence France Presse TOKYO, Japan (AFP) — Most people look for a place to hide when a typhoon is on the horizon, but Atsushi Shimizu hopes that the fury of nature may one day help resource-poor Japan tackle its energy woes. As thousands of Australians seek shelter from a “monster” cyclone battering the country’s northern coast, the Tokyo-based engineer believes that his bladeless wind turbine can not only stand up to the […]

Oil-soaking sponge could help clean up serious spills

(Reuters) — The Oleo Sponge can soak up oil in water super quick. It could one day help clean up major spills like the one at Deepwater Horizon seven years ago. Developed at Argonne National Laboratory, it’s made of a polyurethane foam like that used in mattresses. The foam’s interior surfaces are covered with oleophilic, or oil-attracted, molecules that draw oil from the water. The material can be wrung out in order to be reused. […]
