Antibiotic-resistant superbugs killed 1.2 mn in 2019: study
PARIS, France (AFP) — Superbug infections killed 1.2 million people in 2019, according to a study published Thursday, which authors described as the most comprehensive assessment of the impact of antimicrobial resistance to date. The death toll means infections by bacteria resistant to antibiotics are directly responsible for more deaths than HIV/AIDS or malaria. The report, published in the Lancet, also found antimicrobial resistance played a role in up to 3.68 million other deaths. […]
WHO maps dangerous misuse of antibiotics
GENEVA, Switzerland (AFP) — The World Health Organization warned Monday that antibiotics consumption is dangerously high in some countries while a shortage in others is spurring risky misuse, driving the emergence of deadly superbug infections. In a first, the United Nations health agency said it had collated data on antibiotic use across large parts of the world and had found huge differences in consumption. The report, based on 2015 data from 65 countries and regions, […]
Babala […]
McDonalds to limit use of antibiotics in chicken supply
NEW YORK, United States (AFP) — McDonalds says it will start globally rolling back use of antibiotics in its chicken products from 2018 as part of efforts to curb microbial resistance to drugs and the rise of superbugs. The decision follows a similar move undertaken in the US market in 2016. It applies to drugs that are also used in human medicine, called Highest Priority Critically Important Antimicrobials (HPCIA) by the World Health Organization (WHO). […]
Resistance risk for new TB drugs: experts
PARIS, France (AFP) — New drugs for hard-to-treat tuberculosis strains may be fast rendered ineffective themselves if incorrectly used, a report warned Thursday, on the eve of World TB Day. Antibiotics such as bedaquiline, delamanid and linezolid have recently been added to the tuberculosis drug arsenal, which is dwindling as TB bacteria develop resistance to an ever-broader array of treatments. Much better control must be exercised over how these new drugs are prescribed and used, […]
WHO puts out first-ever list of antibiotic resistant bacteria
The World Health Organization (WHO) published its first ever list of antibiotic-resistant “priority pathogens” and called on governments to help increase the research and development (R&D) of new antibiotics to address the growing problem. The United National Health Agency said that many of these bacteria have already evolved into deadly superbugs that are resistant to many antibiotics. According to the health organization, the bugs “have built-in abilities to find new ways to resist treatment” and […]
Beard bacteria could lead to new antibiotics
THE looming crisis of antibiotic resistance means diseases that were once easily treatable are becoming deadly again. The over-prescription of antibiotics for conditions that don’t require them is spurring resistant mutations leading to so-called superbugs – multi-drug-resistant infections that can evade the medicines designed to kill them. “What we’ve done as a human species is to basically coat the world in antibiotics by our overuse and inappropriate use. So, we’ve selected for these resistance mechanisms in […]
