Abe: Nationalist blueblood at home, shrewd diplomat abroad

by Shingo ITO Agence France Presse TOKYO, Japan (AFP) — Shinzo Abe, on course to become Japan’s longest-serving leader after Sunday’s election win, is seen as a pragmatic and canny diplomat who has cozied up to Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin while pushing a nationalist agenda at home. Groomed for power from birth, the 63-year-old is often viewed as arrogant but has also shown a self-deprecating sense of humour, dressing up as video game icon […]

Abe in pole position as Japan vote enters home straight

by Richard Carter Agence France-Presse TOKYO, Japan (AFP) – Candidates in Japan made a last-ditch plea to voters Saturday on the last day of campaigning before an election expected to return Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to power with a comfortable majority. Polls show Abe and his conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) are clear favorites to win Sunday’s election, handing him a fresh mandate for his hardline stance on North Korea and “Abenomics” growth strategy. Abe’s coalition is […]

Japan says economy grows 0.5% in July-September

Tokyo, Japan (AFP) — Japan’s economy grew more than expected in the third quarter as exports offset slack consumer spending, official data showed Monday. The world’s third largest economy expanded 0.5 percent quarter-on-quarter between July and September, for an annualized 2.2 percent expansion in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the Cabinet Office said. The market had forecast a slower 0.2 percent growth rate, or an annualized expansion of 0.8 percent. Japan’s economy contracted in the last three months […]

Abe pledges to boost economy as upper house poll campaign begins

(REUTERS) Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe began an upper house election campaign on Wednesday with a pledge to rev-up the economy as surveys showed his ruling bloc ahead, despite doubts over Abe’s economic growth recipe. Abe’s coalition is in no danger of losing power in the election but he needs a solid win to keep his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) lawmakers in line and perhaps stay on another three years after his tenure as […]

Japan economy avoids recession with 0.4% growth in Q1

TOKYO, Japan (AFP) Wednesday 5/18/2016 — Japan sidestepped a feared recession in the first quarter, preliminary data showed Wednesday, but the weak growth reading underscored how Tokyo’s efforts to cement a firm recovery in the world’s number three economy have failed to gain traction. Gross domestic product expanded by 0.4 percent between January and March — or a 1.7 percent annualised rate — after a contraction in the last three months of 2015. But the slightly […]

Japan economy shrinks in Q2 in setback for “Abenomics”

(Reuters) — Japan’s economy shrank at an annualized pace of 1.6 percent in April-June, government data showed on Monday (August 17) as exports slumped and consumers cut back spending, a bad omen for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s policy drive to lift the economy out of decades of deflation. China’s economic slowdown and its impact on its Asian neighbours have also heightened the chance that any rebound in growth in July-September will be modest, according to […]

What can we learn from Abenomics?

Author: Adam S. Posen, Peterson Institute of International Economics (Courtesy East Asia Forum) — One of the striking things about the past few decades of Japan’s economic history has been the fact that textbook macroeconomics could have predicted most of it. Back in the late 1990s, this was a controversial point of view. Many people spoke about the ‘specialness’ of the Japanese economy, just as they have about the ‘specialness’ of recent monetary policy. This over-complication seems […]
