Successive quakes hit Itbayat, Batanes; strongest so far recorded at 6.4 magnitude

(Eagle News) – A magnitude 6.4 quake shook Itbayat, Batanes on Saturday morning, July 27, about three hours after another quake of a slightly lower magnitude struck the area.

The tectonic quake’s epicenter was at 19 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes and had a depth of 43 kilometers. It struck the area at 7:38 a.m., the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The quake was also felt at intensity 4 in Basco, Batanes.

The magnitude 6.4 quake happened three hours after a 5.4 magnitude quake hit 12 kilometers northeast of Itbayat at 4:16 a.m. This first quake was 12 kilometers deep, shallower than the next quake.

This dawn quake was felt at intensity 6 in Itbayat, and at intensity 3 in Basco and Sabtang in Batanes, according to PHIVOLCS.
