Strong aftershocks continue to rock Mindanao after 6.3 magnitude quake; intensity 7 quake felt in Kidapawan City

(Eagle News) — Aftershocks continued to be felt in Mindanao after a magnitude 6.3 quake hit North Cotabato on Wednesday night, October 16, as many shocked and scared residents continue to stay outdoors for fear of another strong quake.

Based on the monitoring of the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), aftershocks continued to be felt in North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Surigao del Sur.

In North Cotabato, aftershocks rock the area every few minutes.

Based on Phivolcs monitoring, the following aftershocks were recorded in Tulunan, North Cotabato alone in the last hour alone as of posting time:

Damage to property in various areas were reported, with Gaisano Mall in General Santos City affected by a blaze after the quake.

There were also severe structural damage seen in Digos City where the quake was felt at intensity 6.

At the Cor Jesu College in Digos City, for instance, some building posts, and walls of the school were severely damaged.

People injured during the quake were also brought to nearby hospitals.

PHIVOLCS said the quake, of tectonic origin, hit 22 kilometers southeast of Tulunan at 7:37 p.m.

The quake’s depth of focus was 8 kilometers.
