Staying Safe in Summer Heat

Summer is not even starting yet, and the windy air is still torturing us every morning.  Yes, the sweater weather is still in.

But all these will change when summer comes in.

Here are some tips from the Centers for Disease Control on keeping cool when it’s dangerously hot.

1. Drink more fluids such as iced tea, juice, and most importantly water, regardless of your activity level. Don’t just drink when you are thirsty. Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask the doctor how much you should drink while the weather is hot. To keep away from losing body fluid, try to avoid drinking fluids that contain caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar and don’t drink too much cold drinks for it can cause stomach cramps

2. Don’t stay outside your house because the ray of the sun can cause 1st degree burn. Stay indoors, and if possible stay in an air- conditioned place. Spend a few hours in mall and cafes to keep your body cool.

3. Take a cool shower or bath and apply SPF lotion to avoid 1st degree burn. Always bring a bottle of water whenever you are outside your house to keep you cool and refreshed.

4. If you must stay out, be sure it’s before noon, or around 7-10 in the morning.  Better yet, go outside in the cooler evening .

5. Drink more than 8 glasses of water everyday and if you must exercise, drink 2-4 glasses of cool, non- alcoholic drinks each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Warning: If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage.

6. Always stay in shady areas.

8. Wear appropriate clothes during summer.  Wear lightweight, light-colored, or loose-fitting clothing.

9. NEVER leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.

10. Eat foods that contains Vitamin C to boost your resistance and increase your immune system. Remember there are number of heat- related illness during summer especially heavy sweating, muscle cramps and fainting.
