Star Wars trailer released, ticket sites crashed

Disney releases new Star Wars trailer, launches ticket sales for movie that’s projected to take in $2 billion globally.

What’s true is that Disney’s promo campaign for Star Wars — The Force Awakens has reached hyperspace.

The company unveiled this new trailer Monday night in the U.S…. and put tickets on sale there — for the December release.

British “Star Wars” fans snapped up tens of thousands of tickets as soon as they went on sale there earlier on Monday.

Disney also released this new poster over the weekend — featuring some but not all the original stars who are back for this latest episode.

Tiffany Smith with movie ticket sales site Fandango says it’s all giving fans something to talk about.

“And what I think Star Wars has been doing and Disney has been doing so well is getting people excited with little snippets here and there. I mean, doing the tiny clips on Instagram or on Facebook or Twitter.”

The latest adventure in a galaxy far, far away is projected to gross 100 million dollars in North America on opening weekend — and take in more than two billion dollars globally.

Other big fall releases could leave a disturbance in the Force — a new Hunger Games instalment and the latest James Bond film.

But Smith says Star Wars is a hard-to-beat box office champ.

“It’s got a lot more buzz surrounding it so it’s going to be at the top of the heap.”

Since its 1977 debut the Star Wars franchise has generated four and a half billion dollars over six films.
