“Split” tops weekend box office

(Reuters) — Bringing in 40.2 million dollars in ticket sales in its opening weekend, thriller “Split” took the top spot at the North American box office for the weekend ending January 22.

“Split,” the latest film from director M. Night Shyamalan, stars James McAvoy as a kidnapper with 24 different personalities.

In second place, newcomer “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” earned in 20.0 million dollars in sales, according to boxofficemojo.com. The film sees Vin Diesel return to action series as Cage, an extreme athlete turned government operative, who opts to come out of self-imposed exile to recover a catastrophic weapon.

Both in their fifth weeks at the box office, “Hidden Figures” brought in 16.3 million in tickets while the animated film “Sing” earned 9.0 million.

“La La Land” rounded out the top five films with 8.4 million in sales, the box office tracking website reported on Sunday (January 22).
