South Korean foreign ministry holds emergency meeting on the North’s nuclear test

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry held an emergency meeting on Wednesday (January 6) in Seoul, after North Korea announced it had conducted a fourth nuclear test.

South Korea’s First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lim Sung-nam, presided over the meeting and strongly condemned North Korea.

“As we all know, North Korea’s provocation is a complete violation of Security Council resolutions and a serious challenge to world peace and security,” he said.

“South Korean foreign ministry will find a diplomatic avenue with our neighbouring countries including the United States, Japan, China and Russia by following the superior office’s directions, and also we will consider counter-measures at the Security Council as well,” Lim added.

Earlier in the day, North Korea said it had successfully conducted a test of a miniaturised hydrogen nuclear device on Wednesday morning.

KRT said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed the documents on Sunday (January 3).

The announcement on North Korean state TV followed detection of a 5.1 magnitude earthquake near its known nuclear test site earlier on Wednesday.

North Korea, under U.N. sanctions for its nuclear and missile programmes, has conducted three previous nuclear tests – in 2006, 2009 and 2013 – all at Punggye-ri, near the location of Wednesday’s earthquake. (Reuters)
