Social media challenge – helping or not helping?

QUEZON City, Philippines (September 5) – After the Ice bucket Challenge, we now have the Black and White Challenge. Although it is a head-scratcher at first – as one wonders what it is all about – diligent internet search finally yields the issue: it’s all about breast cancer awareness. So, the next question is, how will the posting of a black-and-white photo as your profile pict would achieve the stated goal.

The challenge-turned-web sensation was highly secretive at first. And it likewise proved to be highly-effective, prompting many FB users to change their profile pic and put the words “challenge accepted” in their timelines.

Upon seeing it, you’ll be very curious on what the challenge is all about and if that curiosity has led to sleepless nights then you’ll end up Googling what the fuss is all about.

The challenge wants to spread breast cancer awareness. Well, whoever organized the challenge  got some parts right in raising curiosity and sparking a fairly large participation among  members but managed to keep the main topic off-air or off-web, with many of the participants just changing their profile photo without bothering what it is all about.

I would put this succinctly: If you want to raise breast cancer awareness, state that as your goal in the first place!

And consider donating. We can fill the internet with black and white pictures but if not a single centavo was donated to the cause, then it will all be for naught.
