SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) — A sinkhole has opened up near Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s home in the exclusive Sydney suburb of Point Piper on Wednesday (February 8).
Sydney suffered heavy rain on Tuesday (February 7) with reports of flash flooding in its eastern suburbs.
According to local media, police were called after reports that the sinkhole had appeared on Wednesday morning.
The street was then cordoned off with the sinkhole less than a kilometer from Turnbull’s Sydney residence.
“We are going to be removing that slab which is hanging there, we will then make the site safe and at the same time, we are working with the three utility companies so that they can do some work around to get power back on, without us having to complete the construction work because that is going to take some time,” the director of technical services at Woollahra council, Tom O’Hanlon told reporters.
Some residents planned to spend the night at a hotel.
“The lady who lives next door to me, I’ve spoken to her too and she is thinking about staying in a hotel tonight just for safety precaution,” said resident Kirsty Mirzikinian.
There have been no reports of damage to private property.
