Senate set to conduct thorough inquiry of Manila police’s “secret jail,” next week

(Eagle News) — A committee headed by Senator Panfilo Lacson is set to conduct its investigation on the alleged ‘secret jail’ found in a Manila police station next week.

Hahanap na lang ng date, probably, siguro next week [we will conduct the investigation],” Lacson said.

According to Lacson, the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs will look into the resolution filed by Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV that aims to probe the operation of the alleged secret jail inside the Raxabago Police Station in Tondo, Manila where at least 11 inmates were found detained.

“As the government’s enforcement arm in its war against illegal drugs, the (Philippine National Police) should safeguard the public’s trust by ensuring that abusive policemen are investigated and punished accordingly,” Aquino said in his filed resolution.

Lacson also said that the committee will also invite PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa to explain about the cell.

Lacson earlier criticized the PNP Chief for defending the policemen involved in detaining suspects at the “secret jail cell,” saying the move was “very arrogant.”

“Defending an unlivable prison cell hidden behind a book shelf inside a police station is incomprehensible. It is also very arrogant,” said the senator who is also a former PNP chief.

The chief of the Tondo police station where the alleged secret jail cell was found, as well as 12 other cops were relieved from their posts on Friday following the discovery of the cell  found behind a bookshelf.
