SHANGHAI, China (Reuters) –  A woman and her child were rescued after a three-storey building collapsed in eastern China’s Shanghai on Monday (April 11).

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the incident took place at around 1:25 p.m. (0525 GMT) in Songjiang district, an area southwest of downtown.

As of 8 p.m. (1200 GMT), one spot in the ruins had shown signs of life and rescuers were moving debris with hands, CCTV said.

Sensors and sniffer dogs were at the scene searching for more survivors, it added.

Preliminary investigations showed that the cause of the collapse was due to a bearing wall being excavated by constructors, CCTV quoted the local fire department as saying.

The first two floors were used as shops while the top floor was for residence, CCTV reported, adding that both the landlord and the person in charge of the construction were detained by police.
