(Eagle News) – Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China will be donating 10,000 tons of rice to “help communities devastated by typhoon Ompong” as he vowed to further help the Philippines which he said was a true friend and partner of China.
The donation was only a part of what China said is its “modest commitment” to help the Philippines, among which was fully supporting and helping the country in its infrastructure and development efforts and in importing more goods from the country.
In a statement which he read in Malacañang after his bilateral meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday, Nov. 20, Xi said he had been looking forward to his state visit to the Philippines and thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for his thoughtful preparations and warm welcome.
The Chinese leader said China will “continue to do its modest best to help and support the Philippines.”
“Our support will come in many forms from lending a hand in your counter narcotics and counter-terrorism struggle, to helping to repair roads and bridges in Marawi and build new infrastructure there,” Xi said.
“China will import more goods from this country and Philippine coconut and frozen fruits have been approved for export to China,” he said.
President Xi said that China will also provide another “50 scholarship grants to Philippine students on an annual basis from 2019 to 2021.”
He will also “implement arrangements for Filipino teachers of the English Language to work in China.”
“Also, China will donate 10,000 tons of rice to help those communities devastated by typhoon Ompong,” the Chinese leader said.
President Xi said that both the Philippine and China, as fellow developing countries in Asia, face “similar developmental challenges that make us natural partners with a common destiny.”
“The two sides will seek greater complementarity between China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Philippines’ developmental strategy, move forward cooperation around the three pillars of security, development and people to people ties, and make our cooperation more comprehensive and balanced,” the Chinese president said.
