(Reuters) — Poyang Lake located in Duchang County in east China’s Jiangxi Province, has seen its peak arrival of about 600,000 migratory birds.
Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake, welcomes nearly 600,000 migratory birds every year. Li Yue, director of the Administration Department of Duchang County Migratory Birds Natural Reserve Area, said among all the birds, cygnets are the main species which contributes to 50,000 of the total number in the past five years.
“Duchang County was given the title of “hometown of China’s cygnet,” by the China Wildlife Conservation Association in April 2014. So cygnets are the largest species, among the migratory birds,” said Li.
Li said thanks to the abundance of aquatic plants in the lake, the number of cygnets increased to 60,000 this year. He added that apart from cygnets, other species such as white cranes, white-head cranes, grey cranes, swan, geese, and tadorna ferrugineas come for wintering every year.
