Pop-up bar brings sci-fi dreams to Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) — A pop-up bar in Hollywood, which allows sci-fi fans to live out their science-fiction dreams, has extended its stay because of popularity.

Nightly cosplayers and sci-fi fans attend ‘The Scum & Villainy Cantina’ off Hollywood Boulevard dressed as characters from ‘Star Wars’, ‘Star Trek’ and other sci-fi series.

“I wanted to build a place that geeks and nerds and cosplayers could all gather and have a place to make pretend. In my head, this is a playset and we are all action figures,” explained the creator of the cantina, J.C. Reifenberg.

The bar, which sees Princess Leias mingle with Darth Vaders and Star Trek captains, has so far been reservation only since it opened over a month ago and will allow fans to buy tickets for June on May 4, the unofficial Star Wars day.

Although the bar with all its cosplayers resembles the Mos Eisley Cantina from Star Wars, Reifenberg insists he created only the backdrop which “took inspiration from our favorite sci-fi movies and television shows.”

There are no rules as to what sci-fi characters guests can come as. However, there is one rule. “There are no synthetic life forms allowed be that Cylons, androids, replicants of any kind but you know, sometimes we’ll make exceptions if our scanner’s broken or something like that,” joked Reifenberg.
