8 passengers killed as plane on medical mission bound for Japan catches fire on takeoff at NAIA

(Eagle News)–A plane on medical evacuation mission which was bound for Japan caught on fire while taking off at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Sunday, March 29.

The accident happened on or about 8 p.m. on Sunday, involving a West Wind 24 aircraft bound for Haneda, Japan with eight passengers on board.

“Unfortunately, no passenger survived the accident,” said the Manila International Airport Authority in an advisory issued late Sunday night.

“The flight, which was on a medEvac mission to Haneda, Japan, was carrying two (2) passengers and six (6) crew members,” MIAA’s advisory said.

Immediately after the incident, the MIAA Fire and Rescue team were dispatched to the site to douse the flames with chemical foam.

MIAA said that it has closed the runway temporarily, as investigators from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board of the Civil Aeronautics Authority of the Philippines are investigating the cause of the incident.
