NFA : No rice shortage even with El Niño

ROXAS CITY, Capiz, Sept. 7 (PIA) – The National Food Authority (NFA) here  assured sufficient rice stock  even with El Nino.

Provincial Manager Benilda Fidel of the NFA said that Capiceños have no need to worry about rice supply even during the dry spell.

She said that based on their latest rice inventory, the rice stocks in the province covering those in the households, traders, millers and NFA will last for 58 days.

Fidel added that while the rice stock of the food agency here is only good for 10 days, rice allocation of 5,000 bags for this month will be arriving soon at their warehouse here while another 5,000 bags has been allocated for October.

“Capiz is still safe of rice supply as harvest season will start in the latter part of this month,” she said.

According to her, the NFA rice stock of  for Region 6 alone is more  than 1.207 million bags.

Fidel also pointed out that continuous rice allocation will also be distributed in the NFA-accredited Institutionalized Bigasan sa Palengke outlets.

During the emergency meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council presided over by Governor Victor Tanco, the El Niño phenomenon which is also expected to affect the province of Capiz was among the issues given focus during the discussion.

Tanco stressed that as early as now, there is a need to prepare and take necessary mitigating measures   for the long drought which is expected to be experienced in the last quarter of this year until the first three months in 2016. (JCM/JBG/PIA6)
