Miss Peregrine rules the box office

Quirky and individualistic director Tim Burton returns to his normal in “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which took in $28.5 million dollars for the weekend ending October 1, according to boxofficemojo.com.

The film is based on author Ransom Riggs’ book of the same name and tells the story of a young boy who learns about himself through the peculiar children at a home where it’s normal to be strange and different.

Real life disaster drama “Deepwater Horizon” came in second at the box office, grossing an estimated $20.6 million, according to boxofficemojo.com. The movie focuses on the hours before and after a BP rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010, leading to the worst offshore oil disaster in U.S. history. Eleven workers were killed and millions of barrels of oil spewed onto the shorelines of several states for nearly three months. The movie, directed by Peter Berg, and starring Mark Wahlberg, looks to pump out 22 million during its initial box office weekend.

Last week’s box office winner, the remake of classic 1960 Western “The Magnificent Seven,” starring Denzel Washington, came in third, adding $15.7 million dollars for a total of $61.6 million, says boxofficemojo.com

In fourth place, Warner Brother’s annimated film “Storks,” bringing in an estimated $15.7 million, for a total of $38.8 million.

Clint Eastwood’s “Sully,” about the miracle plane landing on the Hudson River starring Tom Hanks, took $8.4 million in its third weekend in release.
