Millenials and technology – a love affair

QUEZON City, Philippines (October 12) – Many actually think that our generation – the Millenials – are the luckiest because of the technology that has been available ever since we were born. On the other hand, we are also perceived as being so dependent on technology that we can barely function without it. The observation was bolstered by the fact that we are always spending our time with our gadgets.

The millennials – also called the Generation Y and Z – were born in the new era of technology where TV, internet, and cellphones were invented. If you were born in the early 80’s to 2000’s you are considered as a millennial.

With so much of our time spent in using technology, studies show that the our generation is tends to adopt technological tools that will make life easier as compared to older generations. In addition, the millennials ranked first in“Technology Use” (24%), in contrast to the Baby Boomer generation that ranked “Work Ethic” as the most defining characteristic of their generation. This explains why our generation are glued to our smartphones and other devices. Even if we don’t admit, we can’t leave our homes without our personal devices. We even take them with us as we sleep. In another study, www.nielsen.com said that 83 percent of the millenials admit to being inseparable from their smartphones.

I live in a student dormitory and I observed my roommates taking their smartphones with them to the bathroom in order to log on to streaming sites like Youtube and Spotify in order to listen to music, proving that the smartphone is the most used tool of the millenials.

Of course, such technological dependence can also have consequences. According to research, students who spend more time using their smartphones tend to get low grades. Also people who spend more time in the internet tend to have sleeping problems. (http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news)

Another problem unique to the millenials is their need to be always on social media. In this, the smartphone is once again the perfect accomplice, allowing them to log on to social media apps even during school and working hours.

The millenial-technology love affair has positive and negative aspects. On one hand, technology allows our generation to be more responsive and to be able to access information and entertainment quickly. On the other hand, overuse of technology can lead to poor health and poor concentration.

So, as an advice to my fellow millenials, we should always be mindful of using technology.
