Meralco to implement power rate hike this month

Power charges will increase by 55 centavos per kilowatt-hour (kwh) this month for Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) customers. MERALCO said, “the increase in the overall rates was primarily due to the generation charge.”

MERALCO rates up:

P0.055/kwh

200kwh- p11.00

300kwh- p16.50

400kwh-p22.00

500kwh-p27.50

With the development, the new overall charge amounts to php8.605 per kwh.

Meralco added power bills of households — with a monthly consumption of 200 kwh — will amount to a hike of PHP 11.

The distribution utility noted the new generation charge amounts to php4.13 per kwh, which was driven by the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) charge hike of 53 centavos per kwh.

The power firm said the higher costs was incurred by the lower capacity dispatched from hydro-electric power plants.

Aside from the lower power output, a higher number of outages also triggered the increase in prices.

Meralco further said taxes and other charges went up by php0.002 per kwh, which reflected the increase in generation and transmission charges.

Meanwhile, the distribution utility noted its sole charge in the bill, the distribution charge, was unchanged since July.
