Manila mayor Moreno vows more vigorous campaign vs illegal gambling, illegal drugs after street cleanup

(Eagle News) – Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno vowed to conduct more intensified campaigns against illegal gambling and illegal drugs.
A few days after he took his oath, Moreno also led an operation in destroying 75 “video karera” machines” to show that he is serious in this campaign.

Before this, he also ordered the clean-up of Divisoria and Carriedo in Quiapo, Manila which are known for constricted public roads due to the presence of numerous vendors and various trash.

There were immediate results after the order. The Manila streets were cleared on Tuesday as illegal vendors moved out. The streets were also cleaned.

Moreno also bared how he was offered a P5 million bribe daily if he would refrain from cleaning up Divisoria of its illegal vendors.

Kapag dumumi yun, ganito lang iisipin mo. Kapag ang Divisoria napuno uli, kayo na mag isip na nalagyan ako (If Divisoria gets messed up anew, then it is logical to conclude that I have been bribed),” Moreno earlier told reporters.

He also made this appeal to the vendors.

Anim na taon niyo na pong napakinabangan ang kalye ng lungsod ng Maynila. Sana naman, mapakinabangan na ng mamamayan ng lungsod ng Maynila ang kalsada (You occupied the streets for six years. It is now time for the people of the city of Manila to benefit from and use the streets).

He had previously vowed to clean up Manila’s streets during his campaign to win Manila’s vote.
