Manila mayor Moreno threatens to close malls, stores selling stolen cellphones

(Eagle News) – Manila mayor Isko Moreno gave shopping malls in the city to clean their stalls of stolen cellphones which are being sold as second-hand mobiles.

Moreno warned Tutuban mall and Isetann mall in Recto that he would not hesitate to close these malls if they will continue to sell stolen cellphones.

“I’m giving you 72 hours Tutuban Mall, Isetann Recto, I will close the entire mall, I will close the entire Tutuban mall. I will close the entire Isetann Recto mall kapag ipagpatuloy ninyong kinakalinga, pinapayagan ang mga second hand cellphone vendor na bumibili ng mga nakaw na cellphone galing sa holdap at snatching,” he said.

Moreno said that this warning also applies to other malls and stores found to be selling stolen cellphones.

He also warned the public not to buy second hand cellphones if there is no proof that this was legally sold by the previous owner to the vendor.

He said those who would buy stolen cellphones are also liable, and could be criminally charged.

The mayor’s warning followed the arrest of suspects involved in selling stolen cellphones, some of whom were just minors.

“Limang nahuli ay menor de edad. Eto mga pakalat kalat na bata na pinapabayaan ng magulang,” Moreno said. (with a video report from Madelyn Villar Moratillo, Eagle News Service)
