Malaysia ASEAN countries should unite to address Spratly issue

Malaysia’s defense minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, said, ASEAN member countries should work together to resolve the dispute on the Spratly islands as the involvement of the big powers could deteriorate the situation.

Referring to the activities by the republic of china on the island, he said, any incident, no matter how small, could spiral out of control, if not contained.

He said, “The involvement of the big powers, like china and the united states has made the issue more sensitive. And that those concerned should refrain from doing anything that can lead to tension.”

Hishammuddin said he wanted the Spratly issue, involving ASEAN, to be resolved at the ASEAN level , and hoped that the ASEAN defense ministers meeting to be held in Kuala Lumpur next week would come up with a solution. (Eagle News Service)
