Magnitude 5.5 quake hits Sarangani, Davao Occidental

(Eagle News) – A magnitude 5.5 hit Sarangani, Davao Occidental Friday morning, at 10:33 a.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

It had a depth of 33 kilometers, and its epicenter was located at 334 kilometers southeast of Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

Phivolcs, however, did not yet say if this was an aftershock of previous quakes in Mindanao, or if it was an altogether separate quake caused by movement in another faultline.

On Thursday, Oct. 31, a magnitude 6.5 quake hit Cotabato and was felt at varying strong intensities in various areas in Mindanao, causing the collapse of structures including the Eva Hotel in Kidapawan City and the Ecoland 4000 conndominium in Davao city.

Hundreds of aftershocks have already been recorded by Phivolcs since the Oct. 29 quake that had a magnitude of 6.6.

At least 14 had already been reported as fatalities following the successive quakes in Mindanao.
