Magnitude 5.4 quake rocks Davao Occidental

(Eagle News) – A magnitude 5.4 quake shook Davao Occidental on Wednesday, September 18, at 3 p.m., with its epicenter located 136 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the quake was of tectonic origin. It had a depth of focus of 24 kilometers.

The United States Geological Survey also monitored the quake which it recorded at magnitude 5.5. The USGS located the quake’s epicenter 112 kilometers south southeast of Pondaguitan, Davao.

Phivolcs said afterhocks are expected in the area.

So far, it has recorded two more aftershocks, with a magnitude of 2.9 and 3.2 in the area of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, occurring at 3:31 p.m. and 3:49 p.m. respectively.

Sarangani is a fourth class municipality in Davao Occidental with an estimated population of 24,000 based on a 2015 census.
