Heavy rains due to thunderstorms felt in NCR, as typhoon “Mangkhut” to enter PHL this afternoon

(Eagle News) – Heavy rains due to thunderstorms were experienced in Metro Manila Wednesday morning which may persist within the next one to two hours, according to the country’s weather bureau.

PAGASA’s thunderstorm advisory no. 1 issued at 9:10 a.m. that the rains being experienced Wednesday morning in Metro Manila are only because of thunderstorms, and not yet because of the typhoon “Mangkhut” which is still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

But the heavy rains will be accompanied by lightning and strong winds might persist until 11 a.m. and “may affect” areas near Metro Manila.

“All are advised to take precautionary measures against the impacts associated with these hazards which include flash floods and landslides,” PAGASA’s thunderstorm advisory said.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said typhoon Mangkhut is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this afternoon, Wednesday, Sept. 12.

It is estimated to be 1390 east of southern Luzon, and is moving westwards at a slow pace of 20 kilometers per hour.

Mangkhut has maximum sustained winds of 200 kilometers per hour, and gusts of 245 kph.

PAGASA said that Mangkhut’s strength could further intensify while it approaches the country, and could have wind speeds near the intensity of supertyphoon Haiyan which struck the Philippines in November 2013.

Typhoon Mangkhut will be named “Ompong” once it enters the country.
