“Goosebumps” tops the weekend box office charts

The spooky-comedy “Goosebumps” topped the North American weekend box office on Sunday (October 18) with $23.5 million in its debut.

The film stars Jack Black as “Goosebumps” author R.L. Stine, who is revealed to be a prisoner of his own books: they actually contain, and can release, the monsters he’s created.

Holding over from previous weeks, “The Martian” fell to second after two weeks in number one. The story of a stranded astronaut added $21.5 million to its $143.8 million haul.

The latest film by director Steven Spielberg, “Bridge of Spies,” finished third with $15.4 million.. The movie which has gained good reviews and Oscar buzz stars Tom Hanks as an American attorney tasked with negotiating the release of a spy plane pilot who was shot down over Russia during the Cold War.

The latest horror film from Guillermo del Toro, “Crimson Peak” disappointed with $12.6 million debut. Mia Wasikowska stars as a young woman who goes to live with her new love in a haunted house.

Finishing fifth and holding strong with $12.5 million is the animated “Hotel Transylvania 2.” The Adam Sandler voices Dracula in the family film that has now brought in $136.4 million in 4 weeks.
